Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma refers to a collection of eye diseases that gradually damage the optic nerve, often linked to elevated internal eye pressure. Without proper care, this damage can lead to irreversible vision loss. Kings Eye Center is dedicated to helping patients understand this condition and offering effective long-term management to preserve lifelong vision.

Forms of Glaucoma:

Several variations of glaucoma exist, each impacting the eye differently:

  • Primary open-angle glaucoma: A slow-developing form in which fluid drains poorly, causing gradual vision decline.
  • Acute angle-closure glaucoma: A sudden and severe blockage of fluid outflow that rapidly increases pressure, requiring prompt treatment.
  • Normal-pressure glaucoma: Optic nerve damage occurs even though pressure readings remain within the typical range.
  • Secondary glaucoma: Triggered by another issue such as trauma, inflammation, medications, or underlying disease.

Signs You May Have Glaucoma:

Glaucoma often advances quietly, but potential indicators include:

  • Loss of peripheral (side) vision
  • Narrowing or “tunnel-like” vision in advanced cases
  • Strong eye discomfort or headaches
  • Blurred vision or light halos

Glaucoma Treatment Options at Kings Eye Center

Our practice offers a comprehensive selection of treatments designed to manage eye pressure and slow disease progression.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) – Improves drainage using a laser to reduce eye pressure.

Streamline™ Trabeculoplasty – Modern laser procedure targeting the trabecular meshwork for better fluid outflow.

Cyclophotocoagulation (CPC) – Uses laser to decrease fluid production inside the eye.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) – Small implants or devices improve drainage with minimal tissue disruption.

iTrack™ Canaloplasty – Restores natural drainage channels with a microcatheter technique.

Trabeculectomy – Creates a new drainage pathway to lower eye pressure.

Glaucoma Drainage Implants – Tubes or shunts implanted to redirect fluid for more complex cases.

Glaucoma Frequently Asked Questions

Many cases relate to pressure buildup in the eye, but genetic factors, age, and other health conditions can also play a role.

Diagnosis typically involves a full eye examination, pressure measurements, optic nerve imaging, and visual field testing.

While it cannot be fully prevented, early detection and consistent treatment greatly reduce the risk of significant vision loss.

Most medical insurance plans include coverage for evaluation, monitoring, and treatment. Our staff can help verify your benefits.

Adults over 40—or anyone with risk factors—should receive comprehensive glaucoma evaluations every 1–2 years.
